2. Key ways to overcome depression.
Depression can be quite overwhelming. And when you’re in the midst of it, you can feel like the only person in the whole world that is struggling with your inner emotions and all, which can make one feel very alone.
Depression is such a complicated illness and effects each individual differently. The first thing to know about depression is that, it is possible to overcome it.
Here are some of the things you need to know in order to overcome it;
1. Expose yourself to funny and lighthearted entertainment;
It may seem too simple, but even watching a funny movie or reading a book more suited to a lazy Sunday than a classroom discussion can help you combat depression by making you smile and laugh, pulling you out of grief for a short while.
2. Visualize A Happy Memory;
The moment you feel yourself sliding back to an awful memory that takes you under, take a deep breath and instantly conjure up the best memories you’ve had probably in the past. Counter the gloom with an immediate dose of positivity!.
3. Exercise, eat right too;
Doing moderate exercise about five times a week can dramatically help your mood. Moderate exercise is a level of activity where it is difficult to sing from your diaphragm while doing it ( at least 25 minutes pop) . Also pay attention to how the type of food or drink you’re consuming influences your mood. You don’t have to do fad diets, but anyone will be depressed if they frequently binge on carbs, junk food, and energy drinks. Moderation is very important to note too.
4. Listen to Upbeat Music;
I have always thought of music as food for the soul ( that’s for me though!). An upbeat tune can change an atmosphere instantly and create a more positive vibe. Listening to upbeat, happy music alters brain chemistry and can improve your mood.
5. Stop the Negative Self-Talk;
Depressed people tend to see the world in a negative way most times. When things go wrong, they blame themselves, and when they go right, they put it down to luck. Depression reinforces regrets, self-doubt and feelings of worthlessness.Don’t take your thoughts seriously when you are feeling low. Acknowledge the thoughts, but this doesn’t mean you have to believe them.
6. Distract Yourself;
If possible, do your best to distract yourself from overthinking. Your thoughts are your enemy when depression sets in. Play with a pet or go for a walk, especially a walk in nature. Watch cartoons or just engage in a random activity that keeps you busy or takes your mind off fears and worries. This is an effective way of overcoming depression.
7. Connect With Friends and Family;
This can be one of the hardest things to do when feeling depressed, but it is one of the most rewarding activities.
Isolating oneself from others may seem like a good idea, but put a limit on it and then get out there again. Speak up, tell it to the people around. Be with those who will lift your soul rather than poison it. If it’s possible, go shopping with your friends. Feel free to tell them how you feel from time to time.
8.Sleep Regularly:
Try to keep a regular sleep schedule.
Keep a balance with not too little and not too much sleep. Staying up late one night and then sleeping in excessively the next day is a sure-fire way to feed depression. Also, don’t try to solve problems late at night when your brain is half-asleep. At least, take naps once in a while.
10. Forgive;
Sometimes being hurt can lead to a state of depression. Let go of any feeling of unforgiveness- or hurts. think of how harmful it might be to your health if you keep feeling “the heartbreak” even in your body system. This can be very helpful for you, especially if this is the main source of it, release the pain.
If you are struggling with depression and want to know how to treat it, connecting with a mental healthcare provider gives you the best chance for successfully overcoming it and returning to a healthier and balanced life. Give yourself some time, there’s nothing wrong with you, stay calm. It’s a process and you sure will snap out of it. Be consistent.
