The Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS), now Institute of Petroleum & Energy Studies (IPES) offers Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology programme designed to target candidates from oil and gas producing communities who seek to pursue a career in the petroleum and energy industry for sustainable development. The Institute provides a conducive learning environment, full Internet access, virtual library, and hands-on training. Students use State- of- the- art software, industry case studies and undertake field visits. Students are encouraged to live and work together to develop team spirit. On completion of the programme, students are offered one year internship with TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited and can also progress to the prestigious Masters of Science (MSc) degree in Petroleum Engineering and Project Development at the Institute.

This PGDPT programme will prepare you for the next steps in your career and you will learn from experts and industry leaders. The Institute faculty is made up of lecturers and resource persons from the University of Port Harcourt, (Uniport) and other universities in Nigeria and experts from the petroleum and energy industry from Nigeria. Learning is supported by modern-day, state-of-the-art, and industry software. Students would participate in field and laboratory visits and review of field case studies.The Institute offers a conducive learning environment, equipped with internet access, hard copy and virtual library and hands-on training with student access to relevant information technology equipment.The IPES hostel is a good standard with provisions that encourage and foster team spirit and collaboration amongst the students. IPES graduates have a 95% internship and employability rate in the petroleum and energy industry on graduation.
Programme Duration:
The programme is an intensive full-time programme that runs for twelve (12) calendar months. The programme is not affected by industrial actions and is fully residential. Fees are non-refundable.
Award of Diploma:
Successful students shall be awarded Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology (PGDPT) from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
Admission Requirements:
A candidate who seeks admission for the PGDPT must have one of the following admission requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an NUC accredited or internationally recognized Engineering programme with a minimum of second-class lower division
- Post HND (Bachelors degree) from NUC accredited or internationally recognized Engineering programme with a minimum of second-class lower division is also accepted
- Bachelor’s degree from an NUC accredited or internationally recognized physical sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology, Geophysics including Science Laboratory Technology (SLT)) programme with second-class lower division
- Candidate must have completed NYSC
Course Delivery: The mode of course delivery is modular, and the instructors are drawn from the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport), and experts from the petroleum industry within and outside Nigeria.

The programme is tuition -paying and successfully admitted candidates shall be responsible for their tuition or seek for sponsorship. However, successfully admitted candidates from the OBAGI OIL FIELDS Host Communities Development Trust (HCDT) which comprise of : Akabuka, Amah, Egi Clan, Idu Obosiukwu, Obagi, Obite,Ogbogu, Rumuekpe, Ekpeye Clan and Oboburu have guaranteed full sponsorship.
